January 2025 felt very busy once Trump took over the White House. Lots of executive orders, though most of them are going to need court clarification.
So what are the MAIN things that matter going into February? What is, and isn't, worth our valuable attention?
Major: Very important, will be impactful.
The ongoing genocide in Sudan and China.
Whoever gets confirmed into the cabinet obviously matters. Call your Senators and share your opinion about those nominated. As a personal aside, that RFK says his kids are vaccinated is out of this world. (I can't find any reporting confirminghe actuallysaid this...)
The TikTok ban pause.
Tariffs used as an effective bargaining chip in the deportation case with Columbia. Sets a helluva precedent! I also didn't know Presidents have the power to just make tariffs. Hopefully the courts will weigh in and clarify before he decides to use the threat again.
The executive orders regarding funding pauses. Those just affects so many things it probably impacts SOMETHING you interact with.
Appreciable: Good context to keep in mind, but don't sweat the details.
I think Trump blaming the plane crash on DEI is the start of the many reminders of government-by-tweet. As the description states, don't sweat the details.
Biden's pre-emptive, blanket pardons aren't worth getting upset about except as bad precedent. But that probably won't come up for a few years when Trump makes his end-of-term pardons OR if the Dems win so much in 2026 they try to pass a law to constrain the pardon power.
Incidental: Good to know, but of limited use beyond its own topic.
Rwanda's invasion into eastern Congo affects control of mineral wealth in the region, but unfortunately the infrastructure is so terrible even if one side completely wins tomorrow they won't have a lot of impact until they can build it up. Rwanda claims those in the Congo want to "finish the job" of the Rwandan genocide, but we don't have reason to believe them. Be wary of claims of genocide by one country against another. Those tend to be political and PR moves. Accusations are more credible if they come from the UN or another outside observer entity.
January 6th pardons, and all of Trump's others, aren't worth getting upset about except as bad precedent unless and until one of them gets arrested for something again. At that point, detail dependent of course, it could be very bad for Trump. But there's no use spending time wondering about the possibility.
Ceasefire in the Middle East! If you have connections to Israelis/Palestinians this will be more important to you but otherwise, the whole thing is so precarious it's hard to have much faith. We'll have a lot more information as February rolls on, so if this matters to you then follow it, and if not rest assured it'll be front-page news once phase 2 happens, or doesn't.
Negligible: Ignore this as much as possible.
The anti-DEI executive order doesn't do a lot but gathers a lot of attention because it's very Trumpy, and we hate that. But it's unimportant, compared to everything else.
Unless you live in southern California these wildfires aren't worth a lot of your attention. In the coming weeks, as they are put out and the damage can be fully assessed, the issue of what to do next may be more worthy. Right now reach out to those you know and donate to organizations helping there if you can. No 'sick retorts' on social media are helping anyone.
Biden claiming the 28th amendment is the law of the land. That's just not how things work.
